Open Public Records Act (OPRA) Requests

The Open Public Records Act (OPRA) is a New Jersey law that gives the public access to government records. It applies to records maintained by public agencies, including municipalities.

 What does OPRA do?
  • Gives the public the right to access government records
  • Defines what records are considered government records
  • Creates an appeals process if access is denied
  • Balances the public's interest in records with privacy and government efficiency
How do I request records under OPRA?
  • Submit an OPRA request
  • Follow the response deadline set by the records custodian
What records are not covered by OPRA?
  • Some records may be exempt from disclosure, such as criminal investigatory records, pension records, or victim's records
  • Records that could jeopardize computer security may be exempt
  • Records that could compromise privacy may be exempt
What can I do if access is denied?
  • You can appeal the denial through the administrative appeals process
  • You can request access through other means, such as informal requests, common law, or court processes
