Dog & Cat Licensing

  • State law requires the licensing of every dog that has either reached the age of seven months or has a set of permanent teeth. By local ordinance, all cats are required to be licensed at seven months.
  • Licenses must be obtained from the municipality in which the animal resides.
  • The Township of Little Falls licensing year is from June 1 through May 31. Licenses must be renewed annually.
  • Proof of rabies vaccination must accompany the application. According to State regulation, the rabies vaccination certificate must show that the vaccination is valid for ten full months of the licensing year; therefore, the rabies vaccination must be valid through March 31 of the following year. For medical reasons, some dogs or cats are given a one-year vaccination that may not cover the registration period. Call the Clifton Health Department at (973) 470-5758 for guidance in these cases.
  • If the animal is spayed or neutered, a certificate from the veterinarian must also accompany the initial application.
  • License fee for a pet that is spayed/neutered is $8.00. License fee for a pet that is non-spayed/non-neutered is $11.00.
  • Licenses are not transferable between animals.
  • Please notify the Clifton Health Department if your pet no longer resides in Little Falls, you no longer own the pet, or if the pet is deceased.
  • Little Falls residents with questions about licensing or rabies vaccinations should email LPALUMBO@LITTLEFALLSNJ.GOV or call (973) 256-0170.
